The Pieta Park Demolition is Dishonoring the Memory of Doña Paz Tragedy Victims

Image
Credit: Jhonil C. Bajado's Facebook page Today is the Anniversary of the Titanic. However, I couldn't help but think of the even bigger disaster Doña Paz when the Titanic is remembered. The Doña Paz was called the Titanic of Asia--a disaster that had more victims than the already tragic, Titanic. The Pieta Park, a Catholic religious shrine, was also dedicated to the victims of the tragedy. I would search for "Dona Paz" on Facebook, and it's sad to know that some bodies were never found . Out of respect for them, I will choose to leave then Anonymous I'd like to cite this excerpt from the Daily Tribune: CATBALOGAN CITY – A plaza dedicated in memory of thousands who died in the sinking of passenger boat Doña Paz has been demolished, drawing outrage among the residents of this city. Catbalogan City Mayor Dexter Uy said the demolition of Pieta Park on Saturday shocked him, especially since the city has not issued any permit for the demolition or the planned constr...

Interesting: Did a Coal Fire Help Contribute to the Titanic's Demise?

I'm no maritime engineer, so I couldn't say yes or no. However, an article from the Smithsonian Institute may provide some interesting information.  According to engineers from the Imperial College London, the streak in the photograph may have been caused by a fire in one of the Titanic’s coal bunkers—a three-story-tall room that stored much of the coal that fueled the ship’s engines. Molony believes that the fire had started as early as three weeks before the Titanic set out for its maiden voyage, but was ignored for fear of bad press and the desire to keep the ship on schedule . “Britannia rules the waves,” Molony says. “They’d been facing massive competition from the Germans and others for the valuable immigrant trade. You don’t want don’t want a loss of public confidence in the whole of the British maritime marine.” Just after survivors made landfall, several people who worked on the ship’s engines cited a coal fire as the cause of the shipwreck. An official inquiry by Br...

The MV Doña Paz Incident Last December 20, 1987, Proves Bad Systems DO KILL PEOPLE

Image
December 20, 1987 , would be a fateful date. Disasters happen any time of the year and that includes Christmas. Christmas tragedies are as real as tragedies in any time of the year. This would also include a critique against unscrupulous business practices. It's a trend where people go home for the holidays, right?Sadly, a lot of vehicular accidents happen worse on December because of disregarding safety rules than because it's December. Some Christmas season disasters could've been avoided if safety protocols weren't ignored. It's easy to get too excited for Christmas that people don't play it safe. Some people even prioritize Christmas over safety even during natural disasters. It was in the late 1990s when I heard of Doña Paz. It was dubbed as the Titanic of Asia. It was also in the 1990s when the movie Titanic (which by the way, had fictionalized elements) such as the love story of Jack and Rose. It was that time I became a fan of Celine Dion's singing. ...

I Have Every Reason to be Scared of RISING Motorcycle Accidents in Cebu City This 2024

Image
CDN Digital, for illustrative purposes only A weekend morning drive can be ruined by rude motorcycle drivers. I encountered two motorcycles and a helmet on the site. I was on my way to IT Park and I found them. A CCTO officer was there, doing some recording. The offenders were probably taken somewhere either for settlement or to the hospital. There was no sight of blood. However, after I hit a motorcycle making a slow turn or tend to be accident-prone, the latest scene still left me speechless. It's not the first time I've been into that but I always felt like, "We'd have fewer accidents if it wasn't for people like them!"  In 2019, I also remember driving home at 9:30 P.M. after attending an evening party at what used to be the JCentre Mall. I remember seeing a person with a dislocated leg from a motorcycle accident. Sure, it wasn't my fault but my blood froze in a figurative sense. It was because the incident happened after I accidentally hit two people ...
