Li Bai the Tang Dynasty Poet's Encounter with an Old Woman's Iron Bar

I remembered one of the stories in Chinese class. Okay, I might be criticizing the way Chinese was taught back then but I'm not going to shy away from remembering life lessons. It's like a Chinese language teacher of mine said, "Was it true I was strict?" and then she followed up by saying, "Did you learn something?" The same was true for another Chinese language teacher who was mad at my quiz scores. Later, the other Chinese language teacher said, "Did you learn something" followed up by, "I'm glad you see Mandarin has its importance." I could only say "Yes." to the two Chinese language teachers. I feel that even wit that old system that I disliked--the two Chinese language teachers imparted special values.

One story was of Li Bai who, like Mencius, wasn't a bright start. Some of the best people today may share their embarrassing pasts. Such a story that I heard was that of Li Bai the scholar. It was said Li Bai didn't like to go to school but met an old lady with an iron bar. The old lady herself was grinding the iron bar to make a needle. Li Ban was astonished by the old lady. The old lady said, "If you persevere, the iron bar will become a needle."

The story of Li Bai inspired me later in life. There will be people who will cause trouble. Yet, I persisted to a certain extent. I may have not finished with honors but at least I finished on time with decent grades. I could say that the same can be true for me and mathematics. I didn't like math as a teenager. It was hard. Not too many people find math easy. Yet, I decided to keep grinding that iron bar. I may not have Latin honors but I did finish on time. I could say I did learn from Li Bai's story to a certain extent.

Recalling Amos Yee's Anti-LKY Rants As He Gets His UNSURPRISING Worst of the Worst Status in American Soil

PHOTO: US DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY   Who can remember Amos Yee, that brat who badmouthed the late Lee Kuan Yew? It's been 10 years and several months since LKY died on March 23, 2015. According to The Straits Times article written by Chinese Singaporean writer Daniel Lai, it should be interesting to note that he's the only Singaporean among the arrested. This is what Lai wrote about Amos, which should be  disturbing at several levels. The webpage states that Yee was convicted of enticement of a minor for indecent purposes, sexual exploitation of a minor via photograph and sexual exploitation of a minor via telecommunications . It added that he was arrested in Chicago, Illinois. The 27-year-old child sex offender is in the custody of ICE after he was released on parole on Nov 20. He is last known to have been detained at the Dodge Detention Facility in Wisconsin, a four-hour drive from Illinois, where he was serving a six-year jail term for child pornography and sexual ...

Understanding the Meaning of the Word "Mandarin"

I could remember writing about the seven words that all mean Mandarin . There was confusion about what Mandarin was in Chinese. The Chinese language subject is often referred to as 华语 (huá yǔ) which was referred to as hua gu in Hokkien. Hokkien Chinese may have used the word lan nang to literally mean "our people". Today, the ethnic Chinese not in China are 华人 (huá rén) or hua lang in Hokkien. Personally, I want to refer to myself as a hua lang than a lan nang. Now, the meaning of Mandarin does have a European origin. As languages evolve and get accepted, it's no surprise that the word Mandarin isn't of Chinese origin. Instead, The Atlantic offers this insight into the origin of the word Mandarin: This one word encapsulates an entire colonial history. In the 16th century, Portuguese explorers were among the first Europeans to reach China. Traders and missionaries followed, settling into Macau on land leased from China’s Ming dynasty rulers. The Portuguese called the ...

Ghosts or Money: the Witnesses of the Chiong Sisters' Case

As it's July and it's been raining hard , it's hard for me not to think of the Chiong Sisters case. It's because the two sisters disappeared during a rainy evening . Sure, it's already been more than 20 years. However, an injustice for one is an injustice for all. In this case, it's not just injustice for the #Chiong7, the families of the #Chiong7--but also for the Chiong family. There's really no real justice when the wrong people are convicted.  As I watched Jacqueline Comes Home --I can't help but comment where God supposedly spoke to Thelma Jimenea-Chiong, where Mrs. Chiong went to a group of seances (which may have never happened and Mrs. Chiong stormed out of the theater, crying, during the rape scenes), and a scene where Marijoy's ghost was at the ravine at Tan-awan, Carcar. Now, it's time to look at another angle of the witnesses that came forward to incriminate Paco. Were there ghosts or money? This would be an interesting question to as...

When July 4 Goes from Philippine Independence Day to Philippine-American Friendship Day

I remembered back in Civics and Culture class when it was taught that July 4 was originally a holiday. Instead, it was moved to June 12. July 4, 1946, became the end of the Commonwealth Government of America. Think about it like it was the handover of the British of Hong Kong back to the Chinese government. I remembered there was a one-time holiday when July 4 had no classes because it was Philippine-American friendship day. The Americans freely gave the Philippines its independence from the Commonwealth. However, the Philippines did become a republic on June 12, 1998. I did remember celebrating the centennial celebration of the founding of the Philippines. It was in 1962 when the late Diosdado Macapagal, the father of Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, issued Proclamation No. 28 . It's because it was in 1898 when the Philippines managed to gain independence from Spain and declare a republic . For a time, the Philippines fell under American control but not without having decla...

Very Easy to Say, "I'm Sure!" and Be Wrong, Am I Right?

I guess that foolish old man did the right thing to block me on social media. The old man remained incorrigible while having his toga display, apparently getting a doctorate.  An earlier post I wrote was about the misuse and abuse of CTTO . I even wonder who in the world is Merkado CTTO? It's very easy to use CTTO to look smart. However, real studies need more than CTTO but several sources. It should be several valid sources and not just sources you agree with. I was laughing at this old man in a toga (who has thankfully blocked me after I tried to refute his errors as a  nobody ) who tends to use CTTO. I think he was also fond of saying, "I'm sure!" and then it ends up with several stupid claims. Such people would be in what might be best called the MARITES Pyramid of Learning (read here ). These people's best sources can be summarized as "Trust me bro" or "Just trust me". In the case of the meme I made, the peak of the pyramid is, "Jus...
